Throughout the course of the child's treatment, there will be a need for many kinds of support therapies. • Transfusions of blood products, platelets and white cells may be needed. • Infections are common in children and may require specific antibiotics. Exposure to contagious disease is likely to occur, so the child may require specific gamma globulin . • Supportive measures can include nutritional support such as artificial feedings through a vein (hyperalimentation). Access to a vein may be a problem so central venous catheters are often used, such as the Broviac or Hickman catheters or the Port-a-Cath . • Drugs, other agents and psychological support techniques may be necessary to help children with anticipatory nausea, or nausea and vomiting after radiation or chemotherapy treatments.
